The Cary High School NJROTC competed in their Area Championship for Drill, Athletics, and Academics last Saturday in Chapin, South Carolina. JROTC Area Six is comprised of 70 schools across North and South Carolina. The top 14 schools qualified to advance to the Area Championship. The Cary Drill team performed very well but suffered due to missing 10 of 15 practices in the 3 weeks before the event due to weather. The Cary NJROTC Athletic team placed 4th in the 8 x 200 relay and earned 3rd place in the 16 x 100 relay. The JROTC Academic Team continued their record of dominance in Area Six by winning the overall Academic Championship. Congratulations to the NJROTC Academic Team on their victory, which made them undefeated for the year.
The Cary High NJROTC competed against 24 teams from across North and South Carolina in the Regional Championship Brain Brawl academic competition. In this Jeopardy-format, live competition Cary High advanced through the competition, decisively winning each round to advance to the championship, where they more than doubled their nearest competitor to become the 2015 Brain Brawl Academic Champions for Area 6. Congratulations to seniors Brendan Kearns, Brenden Jobe, and junior Alex Hill! Additionally, in individual competition, Brendan Kearns decisively won the Individual Brain Brawl Competition, scoring more points than all other competitors combined. Congratulations, Cadets!
The Cary High NJROTC team competed against 12 schools from North and South Carolina at the Cape Fear Blue & Gold Drill, Academic, and Athletic Competition in Fayetteville. Many of the top tier units in the region were present. The Cary High cadets performed exceptionally well. They had one cadet medal individually in Drill, junior Alex Hill. They took three of the top five individual positions in the Academic competition, junior Alex Hill placed 5th, senior Brenden Jobe placed 3rd and senior Brendan Kearns placed 1st overall. In the unit competitions, the Cary cadets placed 4th overall in drill but won two of the drill events. They placed 3rd overall in the Personnel Inspection and 3rd overall in Physical Fitness. And the Cary team placed 1st Overall in the team Academic competition. Overall, the Cary team finished 3rd and qualified to advance to the Area Six Championship Meet. Well done, Cadets!
Cary NJROTC competed against some of the best units in central North Carolina at the Falcon Fury Drill Meet in Greensboro. The Cary unit is exceptionally proud of placing 1st overall in Academics. They placed 2nd in three drill events and 3rd in another to finish 2nd overall in Drill. The Cary cadets placed 3rd overall in the Personnel Inspection and placed 2nd in push-ups to help them gain a 4th place overall in Athletic events. In the combined scoring, the Cary NJROTC team finished 2nd place in the Overall competition. Two Cary cadets brought home individual medals for drill, sophomore Aaron Jones (5th place) and senior Shaina Breault (2nd place).

The Cary High NJROTC entered five teams into this year’s National Academic Exam. In competition against more than 600 other NJROTC units and more than 1,700 separate teams around the country, Cary High NJROTC had one team place in the top 5%, three teams finish in the top 15%, and four teams in the top 25% nationally! All five Cary teams placed in the top 40% in the nation. Congratulations, Cary High NJROTC academic team.
Cary High NJROTC competed at Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville on November 16th. The drill team finished 4th overall out of 17 schools. They earned one 2nd place and two 3rd place finishes in Drill and brought home both 2nd and 3rd place in Academic competition. Also, two cadets medaled in individual competition; Kevin Dai with a 5th place finish and Zach Spendley with a 3rd place medal.

The Cary High NJROTC unit competed at the Area Six Regional Championship Meet on Feb. 22nd and 23rd. They earned a First Place finish in the Academic competition, two Second Place finishes in Regulation and Exhibition Drill events and one Third place finish in a Physical Fitness event. Their collective performance earned the unit 4th Place in the Overall Regional Championship.
Cary High NJROTC unit participated in a nationwide academic competition, the Rebel Challenge Academic Postal, sweeping First and Second place in the Varsity Division against 43 teams from across the country. Cary cadets earned seven of the top ten individual scores among 215 competitors!! Congratulations to Brian Schmid, Will Mooring, Layton LaCorte, Austin Cobb, Brendan Kearns, Sam Coleman, and Charlene Clanton!! The Cary Freshman team also earned 2nd place in their division in competition against 24 teams from across the country. Congratulations to James Sauls, Justin Morey, Gabe Godwin, Alex Hill, and Zach Spendley!
Cary’s NJROTC academic team took a long bus ride to the foothills of North Carolina, on February 9th, to compete in a 20-school competition in Lincolnton. The academic team of Brandon Carpenter, Brendan Kearns and Layton LaCorte finished a respectable 4th, a vast improvement from last year’s showing at the event.
The Cary High Navy JROTC unit competed at the Myrtle Beach High School Drill and Academic Meet on Dec. 1st. They took 1st Place in Academics with Brian Schmid and Austin Cobb tying for 2nd place in individual academic scoring. In the Drill competition the team took 1st place in two team events and 2nd place in one team event. Brian Schmid and Layton LaCorte earned 2nd place in individual events and Kevin Dai earned 1st place in an individual event. The Cary High NJROTC finished 3rd against 16 schools from North and South Carolina.
The Cary High Navy JROTC unit competed in a Drill and Academic competition against 13 schools at Cape Fear High School on Saturday, Nov. 17th. They earned 1st & 2nd Place in Academics and in Drill events they earned four 1st place, one 2nd place, and three 3rd place trophies. The team won 1st Place Overall for the competition.
The Cary High Navy JROTC Unit competed at the Southeast Guilford High School Drill, Academic & Athletic Meet on Oct 20th. They earned 1st Place in two events, 2nd Place in three events, and 3rd place in two events. They finished the competition in 1st place for Overall Academics, 2nd place in Overall Drill and 3rd place for the Overall Competition.
The Cary High School Navy JROTC unit competed at the Gray’s Creek Drill and Field Meet on Oct 13th. They earned 1st place in two events, 2nd place in three events, and 3rd place in one event. They finished the competition with a 4th place in the Field competition, 2nd place in the Drill competition and 2nd Place overall out of 14 schools in competition.
