FEIGHTW-EDITFriends and Family of Cary High School NJROTC,

The first quarter of the 2013-14 school year has been a whirlwind.   Back in August we kicked the year off with a trip for 23 cadets to Basic Leader Training.  They spent a week in the Pisgah National Forest at Camp Daniel Boone undertaking fun and challenging training, including whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and tubing.  Just before the school year began, 34 new freshmen participated in Cadet Orientation in preparation for the new school year.

Our freshmen (NS-1’s in our terminology) had to hit the ground running due to our very early Annual Military Inspection (AMI).   On Oct 8th, only six weeks into the school year, they underwent our most challenging annual event and performed spectacularly!   The unit received an outstanding grade on the inspection and the cadets performed exceptionally well.

As in all other facets of life, things cost money.  NJROTC is no exception.  Our principal fund-raising activity every year is running concession stands at NC State home football games.   This year the school has 8 home games and meeting our obligation for at least 36 cadets and 14 parents for each games has been challenging.  This is the area that we most need the support of parents!!  There are two games remaining this year, Nov 23rd and Nov 30th.   Please consider committing to assist with at least one of those games.

Due to the early AMI and the large number of NC State home games, our competitive season has had to take a back seat.   But we are now ramping up for a number of competitions.  The Marksmanship team has already competed twice and has several more meets in the near future.  The Drill team has its first competition at Cape Fear High School on Nov 16th and will travel to Myrtle Beach on Dec 7th.

Our parade season began a few weeks ago with the Cary High homecoming parade and will continue with the Raleigh Veterans Day parade on Nov 9th and the Holly Springs and Cary Holiday parades on Dec 14th.  Please consider coming out to see the cadets at one of those events.   Our community service efforts will also increase during the holiday season as we support the Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign and toy distribution with the Salvation Army.

The unit has started the year off very well and I continue to expect great things as we roll through the approaching winter.  Looking down the road, we will need a great deal of parent support for the Drill Meet that we hose on March 1st.   Please put that event on your calendar now.   It will require the support of every cadet for the entire day and many of our parents!!  Please consider saving that date to help us make it a successful event.
